tldr: The features have been greatly reduced over the years.

When I registered with Gandi in 2009 I got the domain, two simple web pages, and five email addresses for the cost of the registration, about $16 a year.

Today you get none of that. No website, no email. Everything is an add-on and costs extra.

I blame spammers and to be fair it’s the way of the industry today. No one I know of offers free domain hosting.

The rare times I’ve had a question their support was quick to answer.
